COINAGE OF BIBLICAL LOCATIONS - VIRTUAL MUSEUM
Although the Bible is not intended as a book of history or geography, it is set within a real historical context and the events described it in took place in real geographic locations. In fact, where verifiable events and real locations have been compared to the Biblical record, the Bible has yet to be found in error. Countless geographic locations are mentioned in the Bible, some of these places (such as Jerusalem and Rome) are still populated and active cities, others are in ruin or have been lost to history altogether. The cities, villages and regions mentioned span a vast area from Spain in the west, to Italy, North Africa, Greece, Asia Minor and the Middle East, all the way to Babylon in the east. Many of these locations minted coins and thankfully many of these coins are readily available today.
It is often possible to trace a trip taken by a Biblical personality, for example in Luke 7-8 Christ moved from Capernaum on the northern shore of the Sea of Galilee, across the sea by boat to the region of Gadara where He encountered a demon possessed man living among the tombs. One can follow the Apostle Paul from city to city as he spread the Gospel to the Roman world. All seven cities in Asia Minor addressed by the Apostle John in the Book of Revelation minted coins. Our link to these places and people are the coins that they left behind.

"Then they sailed to the country of the Gerasenes*, which is opposite Galilee. When Jesus had stepped out on land, there met him a man from the city who had demons. For a long time he had worn no clothes, and he had not lived in a house but among the tombs. When he saw Jesus, he cried out and fell down before him and said with a loud voice, 'What have you to do with me, Jesus, Son of the Most High God? I beg you, do not torment me.' For he had commanded the unclean spirit to come out of the man. (For many a time it had seized him. He was kept under guard and bound with chains and shackles, but he would break the bonds and be driven by the demon into the desert.) Jesus then asked him, 'What is your name?' And he said, 'Legion,' for many demons had entered him. And they begged him not to command them to depart into the abyss. Now a large herd of pigs was feeding there on the hillside, and they begged him to let them enter these. So he gave them permission. Then the demons came out of the man and entered the pigs, and the herd rushed down the steep bank into the lake and drowned." Luke 8:26-33 *Gadarenes in some manuscripts.
