VIRTUAL MUSEUM - MONEY OF THE BIBLE

In the Bible money and coins are mentioned many times and in many places. Of the fourty parables taught by Christ, sixteen concern money in some way. In the Bible we find specific coins mentioned, such as the "Widow's Mite" and the "Tribute Penny." In addition there are a number of rulers mentioned in the Bible who issued coins that we can collect today, among them Augustus Caesar, Herod the Great and Pontius Pilate. There are a large number of locations referred to in the Bible from small villages to large cities, many visited by Christ or the Apostles and various other figures. Many of these locations issued their own coinage. There are also many types of coins that would have been used by people living in the ancient Holy Landthat are not specifically mentioned in the Bible, but that still make up part of the history of that period. Each of these coins has a story to tell us from across the centuries.

The coins in this collectionrepresent a tangible link to the people, places and events recorded in the Bible. When you hold one of them in your hand you are touching an object that was there when the event happened. For example, the "Tribute Penny" in this collection (a silver Denarius of the Roman Emperor Tiberius Caesar) probably wasn't the one Christ held in His hand and used to illustrate His lesson twenty centuries ago, but it was also in circulation at that time and was actually touched and used by ancient people.
